“The Broadway Musicals Yearbook” will be heard on Artsound FM 92.7 at 5pm on Sunday 13 June and repeated at 11pm on Monday 14 June. The show is produced and narrated by Len Power, Canberra theatre critic, music critic and radio presenter.
This week – the musicals of 1969
Katharine Hepburn was singing and dancing on Broadway in 1969 in the Coco Chanel musical bio, ‘Coco’. After her triumph in ‘Mame’, Angela Lansbury was back in Jerry Herman’s ‘Dear World’ and the American Independence musical, ‘1776’, was a big hit. The bawdy medieval English musical hit, ‘Canterbury Tales’, based on Chaucer’s stories, also arrived on Broadway.
Songs in this program include ‘Dear World’ (Angela
Lansbury), ‘Come On And Marry Me, Honey’ (Angela Baddeley), ‘Piddle Twiddle and
Resolve’ (William Daniels), ‘Gabrielle/Coco’ (Katharine Hepburn) and the
beautiful ‘Starfish’ (Judy Kuhn) from Lionel Bart’s ‘La Strada’, which lasted
only one performance on Broadway.
